Antique Caucasian Karabagh rugs and Runner Rugs, circa 1900. These oriental rugs Runner Rugs were made in the south-eastern Caucasus close to the Kazak district and bordering north-eastern Iran. These Persian Runner rugs are exemplary in their quality and design and are considered amongst the best carpets made in the Caucasus region. These Persion rugs from this region uses a distinctive weave, a double weft which occurs between every two rows of knots. The geography of Karabagh contributes to the rugs falling into multiple design categories: the village type similar to the richly colored Kazaks, the city type influenced by classical Persian carpet style and the Russian design appealing to Western tastes and sensibility. Karabagh rugs feature medallion like eagle Kazak and Kazak with medallions containing pictorial and realistic forms and (similar to French style, Aubusson, and Savonnerie) floral motifs. This antique piece features horsemen, making it a very collectible piece. The ivory background contrasts beautifully with the red and orange accents as well as the deep red border. This runner rug can be very good idea as a stair runner and bedroom runner rug. Handwoven in 1900.
