This beautiful Pure silk area rug was handwoven in 1880 and is an extremely rare, collectable Rug. This piece is a Persian Mohtasham Kashan rug. Mr Mohtasham was a business owner in the textiles production industry, exporting fabric. When his business fell upon hard times, and trading decreased, their wool silk and yarn factories fell dormant. However, Mr Mohtasham’s wife had great knowledge of high-end rug weaving techniques and designs from her life in Farahan. She was from a village called Anjedan, famous for rug making and together, Mr Mohtasham and his wife changed their workshops to enable the creation of the famous Mohtasham Kashan rug. Constructed with the same fine lambswool and silk used in their fabrics, their works became known for their 1st class construction and design. With the first woven pieces being gifted to Iran’s kings, princes and princesses, their success grew with exports going to the wide world. Today very few Persian Mohtasham Kashan rugs can be found, with even fewer Silk versions available, making this piece one of the rarest, most prized rug designs known to the 19th century.
Mohtasham Kashan carpets are considered a solid art investment due to their rarity and elegant construction. Woven with a fantastic purple colour palette and elegant medallion design. With intricate floral decorations through both the centre and framing border.
